The Nation's Poverty Level is Up
13-Sep-2011 According to the latest Census numbers, nearly 500,000 Arkansans are at or below the poverty level. The nation is seeing the highest poverty level since 1993. KARK 4's Bakari Savage spent time at a food pantry to get a closer look at Arkansas' face of poverty. Hunger and poverty tend to go hand in hand. The national poverty level is 15.1%. Our state's level is 15.5%, slightly above the national average. There are many different reasons but this is a cycle that will end for some but not all.
"It makes me cry sometimes, when I think about it. What I went through, the suffering I'm going through can't be measured," laments out of work army vet Tommy Monk. His suffering is multiplied times two--- the discharged army vet and his girlfriend have to rely on the Mosaic food pantry for groceries neither can work because of health problems.
